March 10 is celebrated as the date on which we remember the rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews. This is also the date on which in Bulgaria we honor the victims of the Holocaust. The rescue of the Jews is one of the few historical events that is the work of the entire people – from the authorities, through prominent public figures, the Church and ordinary people.
The rescue consisted in the fact that on March 10, 1943, the deportation to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany was stopped. These are Jews who live on Bulgarian territory. About 11,400 Jews from White Sea Thrace and Macedonia were nevertheless sent to “Treblinka”.
