The story:
On March 8, 1857, in New York, women from sewing and textile factories went out to protest poor working conditions and low wages. The female workers were attacked and dispersed by the police. Two years later, on the same month, these women formed their first trade union.
Other protests followed in the following years, the most famous of which was in 1908, when women organized a march through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. In 1910, the first international women’s conference was held in Copenhagen, at which, on the proposal of the German socialist Clara Zetkin, it was accepted: every year to celebrate the day of women workers and their international solidarity to fight for equality with men in all social spheres of life.
In 1977, the UN General Assembly adopted March 8 as the International Day for Women’s Rights and Peace.
