On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of St. 42 Martyrs in Amoria. At the beginning of the 9th century, the city was constantly attacked and besieged by Arab tribes who already professed Islam.
The story has been preserved since the time of the Byzantine emperor Theophilus (829-842). The Christians defended themselves fiercely and the enemy was just about to retreat, when a traitor showed the opponents the vulnerable side of the fortress city wall, the city was taken and burned.
Most of the inhabitants and soldiers who defended the city were massacred or taken into slavery. For retribution, the winner ordered the main military leaders – 42 people – to be imprisoned in the dungeon. On this day, the church honors the memory of all brave men, good soldiers and faithful servants of Christ.
