Two former Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) said on Friday that the idea of holding elections to Lok Sabha and Assemblies together is good, but a legal framework is necessary to ensure smooth conduct of this long-drawn process. A former CEC said that it is convenient and logical for the Election Commission to conduct simultaneous elections. At the same time, others said that there is no problem in the process of holding elections at different times.

Rawat reminded that when the Election Commission was asked about simultaneous elections, it had informed the government that ‘one nation, one election’ happened in the years 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967. He said, “It happened and it is possible to do it again. Secondly, the Election Commission had pointed out that to do this again, there is a need to make some amendments in the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Funding for EVMs and deployment of security forces
“Apart from this, there is a need to allocate more funds for EVMs and increase the deployment of paramilitary forces during elections,” Rawat said. If these things happen, it will be possible to have ‘one nation, one election’.
