The city celebrated “Seniors’ Day 65 plus” in the Astoria Hall with over 500 guests

The city invited all Walldorf seniors aged 65 and over to a Maultaschen meal in the Astoria Hall. This was apparently well received: around 520 people accepted the invitation, over 100 more than last year, when the city held the “Seniors’ Day 65 plus” for the first time after a long Corona break. Even back then there was a new culinary concept: the focus should be on regional specialties. The “premiere” featured steamed dumplings with potato soup, a typical dish of the Electoral Palatinate cuisine. This time the menu included Maultaschen, a dish from the Württemberg region, which was served with potato salad.

Mayor Matthias Renschler, who arrived a little late due to a short-term but important appointment, thanked everyone involved, including Heike Käller from the Culture and Sport Department, who was responsible for the organization, as well as the members of the DRK and the fire department, who were responsible for the event The necessary protection was there in the event of an emergency. The helpers had a quiet afternoon, just like the other guests, and a sociable afternoon with good food, pleasant conversations and an entertaining program.

Armin Rößler, head of the public relations department, initially welcomed the seniors on behalf of the mayor. There are a few legends about the origin of the Maultaschen, says Rößler, the best known and perhaps most popular comes from the Maulbronn Monastery. There, towards the end of Lent, a lay monk named Jacob is said to have unexpectedly come into possession of a beautiful piece of meat that he did not want to throw away. So he chopped the meat into small pieces, mixed it with the vegetables and hid the whole thing in small pockets of pasta dough. So he was able to hide the meat from the eyes of God and his fellow brothers – and served the hearty meal as a Lenten meal. The Maultaschen are therefore also popularly known as “Herrgottsb’scheißerle”. The seniors enjoyed them just as much – there was both a vegetarian and a meat version.

With so many guests, active support was of course needed: Like last year, around 80 students from course level 2 at the high school helped and ensured everything went smoothly, both with setting up and dismantling as well as with serving the food and drinks. Other students took part in the program design: Eighth-grader Emil Sérié played “Bacchanal” by Franz Liszt on the piano and received great applause, as did Sabine Hansen from tenth grade for her vocal performances. The Circus Bely contributed another item to the program. The Bely Sisters impressively demonstrated how acrobatically a human body can be bent and contorted – including splits and one-armed handstands. The enthusiastic audience also gave a lot of applause. The school orchestra of the high school, under the direction of Thomas Weigel, rounded off the successful and entertaining senior day program and musically crept into the ears and hearts of the guests with, among other things, the “Pink Panther Theme”.

At the height of the atmosphere, the Roger Roller Duo, who were responsible for the musical entertainment before, between and after the program items, encouraged the guests to sway and sing along. Finally, at the vocal request, “the hands went to heaven” and the obligatory “Happy to Coziness” was also a must. Conclusion: a successful event that was well received by the city’s guests.
