Former Croatian international Mario Mandžukić made headlines with a great guest. The 34-year-old World Cup silver medalist, who is currently under contract with AC Milan, donated all of his March salary to charity.
He hadn’t played a game for the Italian team that month because of a muscle injury. According to Club President Paolo Scaroni, the money will go to the “Fondazione Milan”, which financially supports young talents. The AC Milan sports director, Frederic Massara, was enthusiastic about the benefit: “An extraordinary gesture that demonstrates the ethics and professionalism of Mario Mandzukic and his respect for Milan,” he quotes the Milanese President Paolo Scaroni. “This gives the club the opportunity to continue supporting the Milan Foundation,” continued Saroni.
Much more professional players could easily afford to forego their monthly salaries every now and then. Mandžukić earns an estimated 1.8 million a year at AC Milan. A few other soccer stars for comparison: Lionel Messi has an annual income of 112 million euros, Cristiano Ronaldo stands at 96 million euros, Neymar Jr. at 92 million euros.
