The scientist Gonzalo Moratorium maintained that the Vaccination against monkeypox should not be compulsory and that I would recommend its use particularly for vulnerable populations.
In dialogue with the program Meeting Point of Radio Universal, Moratorium indicated that the vaccine against monkeypox it is effective “even three or four days after having had contact with an infected person” and called to “take care of the communities where the transmission chains take place.”
However, the virologist emphasized that there is no need to “stigmatize a community” since it is It is not a sexually transmitted disease.. In this sense, he exemplified: “I use a condom, that does not mean that I am 100% protected because here the important thing is close contact, mucous membranes, body fluids, saliva. The routes of transmission are close contact.
Moratorium was also consulted about the statements of the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, who had recommended “keep the couple stable and be careful in sexual relations” to avoid contagionsomething that generated discomfort in LGBTIQ + groups, with whom he later met to clarify their expressions.
“I think it is very good that you have met and that you clarify. You have to put yourself in the shoes of the Minister of Health, who is dealing with many issues and who does not necessarily have experience in infectious diseases. That experience was forcibly generated and he didn’t mean anything bad when he said it, no problem with that”, he expressed.
The virologist indicated that the contagion of monkeypox can also occur through close contact with contaminated objects such as sheets, towels, or dishes. “It’s not necessarily from having sex. Let’s not think that by using a condom we are protected because it is not like that, ”she pointed out.
Regarding the symptoms of the disease, the expert reported that, according to a “recent article in a very prestigious medical journal”, out of a universe of 600 infected patients from 15 different countries, “75% had fever, 50% muscle pain and 60% swollen glands”. And he added: “Not everyone necessarily sprouts their hands and feet. When we go to the specific symptoms, 75% had the injuries.”
He also noted that, of that universe of 600 people, 98% declared to be homosexual but he remarked that this is “circumstantial” since “chains of transmission already take place in other communities”.
When the vaccines arrive in Uruguay
Last Monday, August 1, Salinas reported that Uruguay will receive between 6,000 and 7,000 monkeypox vaccines in late October or early November. of this year.
The head of the MSP indicated that the availability of vaccines against this disease is 100,000 for the Americas area.
According to Salinas, it is not a vaccine “widespread” but is “specifically directed” so “the quantities are small”. In this line, he indicated that Uruguay will receive between 6,000 and 7,000 and that Brazil, for example, requested some 60 thousand.
Last Friday, July 29 the first case of monkeypox was confirmed in Uruguay, imported and detected via PCR.
