Gonzalo Higuain has been lacing up his boots for Inter Miami for a year and a half. The former Real, Juve and Chelsea striker likes Major League Soccer so much that he wants to lure Lionel Messi to the United States with testimonials.
A move from La Pulga to America’s premier soccer league would be “a win for MLS and the country as a whole,” Higuain told Stats Perform. “If he wanted that, he would have fun and be happy here.”
Miami starts the new season on Sunday. Sunday will open against the Chicago Fire, which recently announced the transfer of Xherdan Shaqiri. Higuain is aware of the increasing popularity of soccer in the United States. “MLS is a very important league that’s growing a lot. There are important players coming and I think it’s going to grow a lot more in the future.”

There have actually been rumors about Messi and Inter Miami in the past. Co-owner David Beckham’s club is said to have approached the superstar several times. For Messi, however, that will not be an option for the time being. His contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs until 2023 and can be extended by one season by clause.
Anyway, Higuain knows what is important to Messi. The two played for their native Argentina for over a decade. They did not win a title together, in 2014 the duo became vice world champions with the Albiceleste. When Messi crowned himself the 2021 Copa America winner, Higuain wasn’t there. He ended his international career after the 2018 World Cup.
