The Venezuelan anti-Chavez leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia Today he called on the international community to “redouble” efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela and assured that the fight for recognition of the opposition’s victory in the South American country “will continue until the end.”
Gonzalez’s message was read by his daughter Carolina during the rally of Venezuelan opposition members that took place today in front of the Spanish Congress, where a right-wing proposal to recognize the former presidential candidate as Venezuela’s president-elect is being debated.
González Urrutia, who arrived in Madrid on Sunday to request political asylum in Spain, reaffirmed in his message the “unwavering commitment” he assumed in the elections of July 28 and insisted that his fight, together with opposition leader María Corina Machado, will continue “until the end.”
“I thank the Government of Spain for giving me support,” the message added, calling on the “international community to redouble its efforts to restore democracy and freedom in Venezuela.”
“The will of the people must be respected and we will make sure it is respected,” he insisted. “Do not be discouraged, I will not let you down.”
Hundreds of Venezuelan opposition members gathered in front of Congress, where a non-binding motion was being debated urging the executive branch to recognize González Urrutia as the winner of the Venezuelan elections.
Although the non-binding motion being debated and voted on in the Spanish Congress – and which is expected to be approved – has no legal significance, it does have significance for the purposes of parliamentary recognition, since it forces Congress to take a position and in this case it is a key issue in the current political debate.
The initiative also calls for an end to the repression of protests, the release of political prisoners and for contributions to the personal security of Machado and González Urrutia, while requesting that the Executive lead the recognition of González in the European institutions, with the aim of taking office as president of Venezuela on January 10, 2025.
