Aboard a 7 meter long boat, at midday, the Landes fisherman and one of his friends decide to get a little closer to the scene. “The closer we got, the bigger it seemed to me,” he adds. I thought of whales, because it is no longer rare to come across them. » However, he quickly realizes that this is not it and discovers the “almost magical” spectacle of two orcas in these waters, “about 4-5 miles (approximately 7 kilometers) from the coast, between Vieux-Boucau and Seignosse.
Between 5 and 10 meters
For a few minutes, Alexandre Paga immortalizes the comings and goings of these two marine mammals. “They were easily recognizable, with their dorsal fin,” he continues. The Landais boat passed as close as possible, a few tens of centimeters from these behemoths. “One must have measured around 5 meters, the largest must not have been far from 8-10 meters,” estimates the fisherman. With his friend Daniel, he did not miss a second of this “privileged” moment. “One of the two went under the boat,” he explains. It was a great first, I had never seen one in real life. »
Without having any real explanations for the presence of these two mammals in an unsuitable part of the coastline, he highlights “climate changes”. “We see this for example with the very frequent presence of dolphins in this sector, whereas a few years ago, they were rare,” he analyzes.
