    A gondola on the Acherkogelbahn fell from a height of around seven meters on Tuesday morning (January 9th). According to initial findings, a tree had crashed onto the support cable and caused the crash. It is initially unclear why the tree fell.

    “The gondola fell vertically,” reports Michael Haid from the responsible police district command in Imst Merkur.de von IPPEN.MEDIA. Several helicopters were called in to rescue the injured. “The terrain is steep and impassable,” said a spokesman for Bergbahnen Hochoetz.

    The almost three kilometer long Acherkogelbahn transports winter sports enthusiasts from the valley to around 2000 meters above sea level. Given the good weather, the cable car was at full capacity when the accident happened, according to the cable car spokesman.

    The authorities initially stopped operating the railway. It was still unclear how the accident could have happened, it was said. “The route is legally free of trees,” the cable car spokesman continued.

    Due to the cold, there wasn’t much activity in the ski area. The affected train was stopped immediately. The skiers who were not directly affected were informed via loudspeakers and some were taken by bus to another part of the ski area.

    It was only in December that an accident in the Ratschings ski area sparked discussions. A tree also fell on the cable car there, but the reason was probably the wind.
