Terrible accident in Austria. A gondola crashed in the Hochoetz ski area in Tyrol on Tuesday. There are several seriously injured people. The news in the ticker.
Update from January 9th, 4:30 p.m: Four people were seriously injured when a gondola crashed in the Tyrolean ski area of Hochoetz – one person is in mortal danger. This is said to be a family from Denmark (see update from 3:06 p.m.).
A gondola on the Acherkogelbahn fell from a height of around seven meters on Tuesday morning (January 9th). According to initial findings, a tree had crashed onto the support cable and caused the crash. It is initially unclear why the tree fell.

“The gondola fell vertically,” reports Michael Haid from the responsible police district command in Imst Merkur.de von IPPEN.MEDIA. Several helicopters were called in to rescue the injured. “The terrain is steep and impassable,” said a spokesman for Bergbahnen Hochoetz.
The almost three kilometer long Acherkogelbahn transports winter sports enthusiasts from the valley to around 2000 meters above sea level. Given the good weather, the cable car was at full capacity when the accident happened, according to the cable car spokesman.
The authorities initially stopped operating the railway. It was still unclear how the accident could have happened, it was said. “The route is legally free of trees,” the cable car spokesman continued.

Update from January 9th, 3:06 p.m.: Who was in the Tyrolean gondola? “All we know is that it is a father, his son and daughter and an uncle. So it’s probably a family,” says deputy district police commander Michael Haid to ORF. The police don’t know where the family comes from. The age of those involved in the accident is also initially unknown. Three other people were also injured. According to the police, this was apparently due to the vibration of the suspension cable.

The crash is apparently not due to a technical defect. According to the police, one fell over Baum caused the crash of the eight-person gondola of the Acherkogelbahn. The accident occurred at around 10:22 a.m.

Gondola crashed in Tyrol – four seriously injured
A tree is said to have fallen on the support cable, reports the Austrian newspaper Krone. The gondola with four occupants then fell between supports eight and nine.
A major operation is underway. Helicopters and mountain rescue teams are at the scene of the accident, along with other rescue workers and the police. According to the mountain railways, the terrain there is very impassable and difficult to reach. The injured had to be rescued from the helicopter with a rope, they said Tiroler Tageszeitung. There is currently no information available about the identity of the injured.
Cause of gondola crash on Achterkogelbahn unclear – “experts have to clarify”
Michaela Burger from Bergbahnen Hochoetz speaks on ORF of a “dramatic accident”. Several trees fell into the cable car route. It is highly unlikely that a gondola will crash, even if a tree falls into the cable car route. “Experts have to clarify how this could have happened,” says Burger. It is also unclear why the trees fell over in the first place. Stronger Wind didn’t work.

Due to the cold, there wasn’t much activity in the ski area. The affected train was stopped immediately. The skiers who were not directly affected were informed via loudspeakers and some were taken by bus to another part of the ski area.
It was only in December that an accident in the Ratschings ski area sparked discussions. A tree also fell on the cable car there, but the reason was probably the wind.
