Goncalo Ramos: PSG’s Reckless Investment or Future Star?

Goncalo Ramos came to PSG with high expectations. So far, the Portuguese has barely been able to impress. After barely surviving his first season at Paris Saint-Germain, all eyes were on how Luis Campos would usher in a fresh start at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs. The French champions’ top football advisor had relieved coach Christophe Galtier of his duties and sold Neymar, while also not hindering the departure of Lionel Messi. Luis Enrique, who was reportedly only Campos’ fourth choice to succeed Galtier, arrived as the new coach . And Campos set about putting together a new squad. One of his first moves was the signing of Goncalo Ramos, who was loaned from Benfica with an obligation to buy. Although the Portuguese haven’t been paid a cent this summer, Ramos will one day cost the Parisians up to 80 million euros. On the surface, the transfer made perfect sense. At PSG there was uncertainty about Kylian Mbappé’s future and they knew they would part ways with Messi and Neymar. A new striker – no matter what type – was necessary. However, Ramos wasn’t the only attacker to walk through the front door of the Parc des Princes during the transfer window. Of the 11 signings Campos made in three months, six were attacking players. Xavi Simons is not included in this, as we know he was loaned out to RB Leipzig but could return at some point. Considering that Mbappé ultimately decided to stay, the cupboard of options was suddenly anything but empty. It was therefore clear that not everyone would get their desired playing time – and at the moment Ramos seems to be one of those who don’t play as often as they imagine. Paying an initial €65 million for him already feels like an unnecessary financial burden that will have to be managed in the coming months. And it’s a sign that, despite claiming to spend more sensibly, PSG is still vulnerable to the odd reckless investment.
