For four days, Manon De Roey rocked the roof in Sommerset West, South Africa. Halfway through the South African Women’s Open, the 32-year-old golfer from Schilde was already three strokes less than her nearest pursuer, after rounds of 69 and 67 strokes. De Roey then continued to outdo her opponents and took her second title on the Ladies European Tour with a total of 14 under par and a four-stroke difference. “This title means a lot to me,” Manon De Roey opened after she had undergone a mandatory champagne shower.

“This title means a lot to me. It was one of my goals this year to win a tournament”

“It was one of my goals this year to win a tournament,” Manon continued. “We have now succeeded in this one and I can only look back on a very consistent four-day event.” Yet conditions on the other side of the globe were anything but easy. Strong winds made playing a lot more difficult. “That in itself was no surprise to me and it also gives me the necessary confidence. At times it seemed that the wind seemed to come from all sides. But I took advantage of it by adjusting my ball flight to take advantage of the wind.”

Exceptional performance

The exceptional performance of the former Golf Flanders top sports student is evident from her statistics: she made 23 birdies during the first 54 holes. “I work very hard on putting. It is also perhaps the most important part of golf, because it is how you can score,” says De Roey. With the victory, Manon De Roey is left with a check for 48,000 euros, which means she moves from eighth place to second position in the earners’ list. She also confirms that after the Olympic Games in Tokyo she is ready for another Olympic participation in Paris.
