Iconic 1997 video game released for Nintendo 64, “GoldenEye 007” was announced as part of the Nintendo Switch Online catalog and the Xbox Game Pass starting this Friday (27).
Online multiplayer is exclusive to the launch of Switchnoted the official website of the 007, but this version will be the same as the original N64. It’s not clear if you’ll be able to use dual stick controllers – the N64 controller only had one and the original game allowed you to use two controllers.

However, to play it on Switch, you must subscribe to the Switch Online + Additional Pack, which costs R$ 262.99 per year.
In turn, the Xbox version will be playable on One and Series X | S, where it will include “alternate control options, unlockable achievements, and native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD,” Craig Duncan, head of the Microsoft-owned developer, said in a post on Wednesday. However, it lacks online multiplayer.
Those who subscribe to Game Pass will have access to the game, although those who have a digital copy of Rare Replay, a compilation of 30 classic games released in 2015, can also access “GoldenEye” for free. Not available for separate purchase.
History of “GoldenEye 007”
As a licensed “sequel” to the 1995 film that featured actor Pierce Brosnan as the legendary British agent, the game won critical acclaim for its fun single-player campaign and epic competitive split-screen multiplayer.
It became the N64’s third best-selling title with 8.09 million units sold – surpassed only by Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, which sold 11.91 million and 9.87 million copies respectively. Rare also developed the “GoldenEye Perfect Dark” sequel for the N64 in 2000, before Microsoft acquired the company in 2002.
Fans expected an Xbox Series X | S was revealed months ago. It was planned for release on the Xbox 360 in late 2010, and apparent extended gameplay footage appeared in 2016.
At the time, Xbox head Phil Spencer said the game’s licensing rights complicated efforts to get it on the console. The versions arriving on Friday (27) do not appear to be the remasters; the Switch release looks visually identical to the N64, while the Xbox release looks like an enhanced edition of the original.
“It’s great to see ‘GE007’ being made available again. I hope this means a new generation will be able to experience and enjoy the game,” David Doak, a developer whose face was famously used for the game’s use of Bond’s ally Dr. Doak tweeted following Nintendo’s announcement of the game’s re-release last September. “It has been an absolute privilege to be part of the talented team that created it 25 years ago.”
