The Golden Coach will be exhibited in the Amsterdam Museum from 18 June. An exhibition about the vehicle will open on that day.
After a restoration of more than five years, the carriage can be seen again by the public. It had already been announced that the carriage will temporarily be given a place in the museum, which will have the carriage on loan until February next year.
The carriage, which is traditionally used on Budget Day, was previously discredited because of colonial images on the side panel. Since the vehicle will remain in the museum until February 27, next year, the carriage will not return to the streets during the third Tuesday of September this year.
In addition to the history of the carriage, the museum pays attention to the debate about its future. For example, questions arise about whether it is desirable that the carriage continues to run on Prinsjesdag and during Orange weddings and inaugurations. The museum asks visitors to share their views on possible changes to the carriage. Earlier, King Willem-Alexander announced that he is following the discussion about the carriage, but not taking part in it.
The Golden Coach will be placed in a glass room in the museum’s courtyard. Visitors can get a closer look at the carriage here. Various stories are told in the six surrounding museum rooms, all of which have a view of the carriage. For example, it is explained that every square centimeter of the carriage has a symbolic meaning and the makers and the use of the carriage are highlighted.
The carriage was a gift from the people of Amsterdam to Queen Wilhelmina at her inauguration. The major maintenance began in 2016. Specialists from the Netherlands and abroad worked on the carriage.
