The finalists for the “Golden Boy” award are out – and in addition to the favorites Jamal Musiala from FC Bayern and ex-BVB star Jude Bellingham, there are also several Bundesliga youngsters in the top 25.
The final list of honors for the best U21 player in Europe, which organizer Tuttosport published on Thursday, also includes Bayern’s Mathys Tel, Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
The only German winner so far was Mario Götze in 2011. This year, all players born in 2003 or later are eligible.
In contrast to previous years, this time not 20 candidates out of the original 100 candidates were eliminated every month. All 100 players remain in the running until a month before the election, then there was a cut and the now known best 20 plus 5 wildcard players make it to the final.
From this group, 50 international sports journalists will choose this year’s “Golden Boy”.
