Deporpress Editorial | Golden and brilliant day in Tenerife. This Thursday, September 21, is a very special day in the centenary history of Club Deportivo Tenerife. The Guimerá Theater in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host from 7:30 p.m. the ceremony of the presentation of the gold and diamond insignia recently awarded to Jorge Valdano, one of the legends of the club and the coach with whom, for the first time in its history, the entity managed to qualify and play in a European competition, the Copa de la UEFA, which evolved into today’s Europa League.

The Tenerife coach, between April 1992 and June 1994, will maintain a live dialogue with the journalist and Canary Islands Communication Award winner, Carmelo Rivero, to open the event, in which the president of the entity, Paulino Rivero, will later present the the gold and diamond insignia to the former blue and white. Jorge Valdano is the fifth coach with the most official matches on the CD Tenerife bench (102) throughout its history between the First Division, Copa SM El Rey and Europe.

Born in Las Parejas, Argentina, on October 4, 1965, he joined the Tenerife team in April 1992 to direct the last eight games of the season. During that period, the club secured its stay in the top flight in impressive fashion, earning notable victories over teams such as Valencia CF, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF, among others.

In the following season (1992/1993), CD Tenerife managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in its history, finishing the league in fifth position.

On September 15, 1993, at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium, CD Tenerife debuted in European competition against AJ Auxerre. The epic victory in the second leg that ensured their advancement to the next round stood out, after eliminating Olympiakos in the round of 16. In that same edition, the Tenerife team faced Juventus CF, the first European champion to visit the Island in an official match. Despite being eliminated, CD Tenerife achieved the feat of beating Juventus in the second leg at home (2-1). Furthermore, in that same season, they reached the semifinals of the Copa del Rey for the first and only time in their history.

The space has full capacity and will be broadcast live on the official channel of YouTube.
