The Ajax striker scored his last Premier League goal on May 6, 2018 in the AZ shirt. Weghorst did that against PEC Zwolle. Last summer he was important for the Dutch national team at the European Championship. Weghorst will have to take a step back in the upcoming international matches, but that also largely has to do with his fitness.
“Wout is someone who can help us a lot in many situations. He has character and a winning mentality. That’s why we wanted him. He was really looking forward to his first goal,” says trainer Francesco Farioli, who indicates that he would also work with Weghorst can start.
Difficult victory
Initially there seemed to be no problem against FC Groningen. Ajax was by far the superior party and deservedly took the lead through Davy Klaassen. The captain made his nickname Mister 1-0 more than true. Coach Farioli’s team should have already decided the match, but spoiled numerous chances.
FC Groningen midfielder Jorg Schreuders took full advantage of a shooting at the back and the score was suddenly 1-1. Van den Boomen saved a penalty a few minutes later, after which it seemed to be a very difficult match. The score was still 3-1 via Akpom and Weghorst.
After the international match, Ajax will visit Heracles Almelo. The following Thursday they will play the away match against Qarabag in the Europa League.
