Gold traffic dismantled between France and Germany, 20 arrests

A traffic of gold which operated between France and Germany was dismantled after the seizure of the equivalent of 30 kg and 1.5 million euros of gold on several departments.

An extensive sweep was carried out in several departments under the aegis of the Specialized inter-regional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle).

The research section of Dijon (Côte-d’Or), the Central Office for the fight against itinerant delinquency (OCLDI), the Interregional Grouping of Burgundy (GIR) and local brigades also participated in the arrest of twenty individuals between May 19 and June 22, 2020.

These people were suspected of having actively participated in a trafic d’or performed between the France and theGermany, as explained by the Nancy JIRS in a press release.

30 kg of gold, cars and luxury watches seized

The individuals were arrested in the departments of the Marne, from Côte-d’Or, of Jura and Bouches-du-Rhône. It follows judicial information opened in Dijon and taken up by an examining magistrate in Nancy after divestiture. The JIRS details the operation of this gold traffic carried out in a pyramidal fashion:

Gold collectors recovered jewelry from thieves that they founded to constitute ingots. Collectors were then responsible for recovering these ingots for sale to a gold buyout company located in Germany.

The searches carried out in the four departments made it possible to seize 29 kg d’or worth almost 1,5 million d’euros, more than 100 kg silver powder worth more than 60,000 euros, but also 12 vehicles with a total value of 340,000 euros, around thirty luxury watches and over 120,000 euros cash.

The press release states that “this illegal gold trade could reach several tens of millions of euros ».

13 people indicted

In total, depending on the jurisdiction, 13 people have been charged “Heads of concealment in organized gang of vols, of aggravated whitening and participation in a conspiracy for the preparation of an offense punishable by the penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment ”.

A man of French nationality but resident in Belgium was arrested on June 15 and handed over by the Belgian authorities to France, eleven days after the publication of a European arrest warrant issued by the JIRS prosecutor’s office.
