“It is on the one hand, on the other hand”, says Liekens doubtfully. “I am also looking at that club with amazement and wide eyes. If you, as a simple member of parliament, look at all the extras and bonuses, you say: ‘Tiens, that’s great. You are there in the non-profit organisation, you are vice-chairman or chairman’. You actually think: ‘We are the suckers and get it on our roof as if we are the grabbers’. Arguing, negativism and creating an enemy image are also part of it. If my daughter wants to go into politics, I would tell her, “Don’t do it.” I would tie them to a pole,” said Liekens.
In 2019, Liekens was elected as a member of parliament for Open Vld in the federal Chamber. Since then, she has been a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and succeeds the Emancipation Advisory Committee. She writes legislative initiatives to defend women’s rights at home and abroad. As a politician, she continues her fight against sexual violence and sexual exploitation.
