“Godzilla vs. Kong” is roasting the cinema charts worldwide · KINO.de

When two primeval giants fight, not only do the tatters fly, but also the banknotes: “Godzilla vs. Kong” rocks the cinema charts.

Warner Bros. is once again boldly making progress: After the studio took the risk in the summer of 2020 in the midst of the corona pandemic and released Christopher Nolan’s expensive sci-fi film “Tenet”, the blockbuster cinema year 2021 will also start – namely with “Godzilla vs. Kong”

The no less spectacular “Godzilla II: King of the Monsters” can be streamed via Amazon

But while the audience struggled with a visit to the cinema in the corona chaos, the monster duel between Godzilla and King Kong hit the ground running right at the start of the weekend: The first potential blockbuster of the year has already been released in 38 markets worldwide. And the reported earnings are loud Deadline at around 122 million US dollars – insane! With this, director Adam Wingard’s contribution to MonsterVerse booked the best theatrical release of a Hollywood film during the corona pandemic.

The Chinese market, where the monster spectacle grossed around 70 million US dollars, has the lion’s share of the gross profit. This even exceeded the starting result of “Godzilla II: King of the Monsters” by 4 million US dollars. In terms of IMAX, the film was able to position itself as the fifth-best start for a Warner film. The market share of a whopping 82 percent is even more outstanding.

German fans have to be patient for the time being until “Godzilla vs. Kong” also starts in cinemas in this country. Until then you can do this Video see the best monster fights ever:

“Godzilla vs. Kong”: Director Adam Wingard has no words

In the USA, “Godzilla vs. Kong” will start on March 31, 2021 in parallel in the cinema and directly via HBO Max as a streaming offer for subscribers. The German theatrical release was canceled by Warner Bros. in view of the existing situation of still closed cinemas, an alternative date is still pending. The hope of a provision via streaming partner Sky is likely to be rather low, after all, “Godzilla vs. Kong” is not a small film. “Wonder Woman 1984” was also promising, but the studio had already postponed the DC film several times.

Director Wingard has already responded to the report via Instagram; with a simple “Holy Shit!”:

The great success, especially in the Chinese cinema market, should be confirmation for Warner to postpone the cinema release in markets like Germany by a few months if necessary. The studio may benefit from the explosive spirit of enterprise when the lockdown ends and the starved cinema fans are allowed to indulge in their passion again. And what is more suitable than two primeval giants who are mighty boarding the twelve?
