Slowly but surely, some normalcy is returning to box office life. Movies like the video game adaptation Unchartedthe drama Dog or the monster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home prove that film enthusiasts are now increasingly interested in going to the cinema again.
Last year things looked very different. Many works have flopped financially and have hardly made any money, as millions of people around the world stayed away from the partially closed cinemas for well-known reasons – and in many places they still do, for example in China, where the comic film adaptation The Batman due to again in the skyrocketing number of cases was able to wash just over 11 million US dollars into the box office.
In Chinese territory, it looked as if the country had the pandemic firmly under control as early as 2021. That’s why a few productions were able to make the local box office ring quite a bit – including the epic spectacle Godzilla vs. Konga commercially successful collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment that was worth nearly $190 million in revenue to Chinese moviegoers alone.

Globally, the clash of the eponymous giants was even able to bring around 470 million US dollars into the purse of the mentioned studios, which is what the project from Death Note-, The Guest– and You’re Nextdirector Adam Wingard makes it one of the biggest box office hits of the last year — and that’s despite Godzilla vs. Kong back then was still one of the first guinea pigs to be launched in extremely uncertain times.
In addition, the crossover was also made available to paying subscribers on the in-house streaming platform HBO Max parallel to the theatrical premiere in the USA, which, to the surprise of all producers, did not have a negative effect on box office behavior. Will the planned sequel be able to build on this unexpectedly great success?
