Godzilla Minus One: A Return to the Origins of the King of Monsters

The king of the monsters returned to theaters last year with the Japanese film Godzilla Minus One, while the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premiered on Apple TV+ on November 17, where we were also able to observe the renowned character.

In Godzilla Minus One, released in Japan on November 3, 2023 and in the United States on December 1, director and visual effects specialist Takashi Yamazaki took the character back to its beginnings.

So it was an allegory of nuclear war, taking away that antihero image that some previous films tend to give him and presenting him as an inevitable force of nature.

The story unfolds in a Japan devastated by World War II, a nation already suffering the ravages of death and destruction and facing the aftermath of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In this scenario, Godzilla emerges, a colossal being that destroys everything in its path, while a group of people look for a way to survive this disaster.

The film, a production by the Tōhō studio, was one of the great surprises of 2023, with success among the public and critics internationally who highlighted its story and visual section, with nothing to envy of films that triple their budget of 15 million Dollars.

Meanwhile, Apple TV+, the streaming service of the technology company Apple, together with the film production company Legendary, premiered on November 17 the first two episodes, of a total of ten, of the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which ends its season next January 12.

The series is located within the cinematic universe created by Legendary known as Monsterverse, which began in 2014 with the American film Godzilla and continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. . Kong (2021).

This explores the origin of Monarch, a secret organization that investigates monsters like Godzilla or Kong, and moves between different time periods, recounting its birth and how it works today.

To the delight of science fiction fans, the septuagenarian creature will return to theaters on April 12 in the film Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire, where the two legendary characters will have to unite to face a colossal enemy that threatens so much. his own existence like that of humanity.

Created by the studio in 1954 as a criticism of the use of nuclear weapons, Godzilla has become an icon of Japanese cinema and part of popular culture, appearing in multiple films, comics, video games and animated series.

Over the years he has gone from being a mutated beast that attacks humans to a hero that protects them, to evolving into a character closer to the concept of the antihero.
