Fans of the legendary overgrown lizard will not really be bored in the coming months, and you could say that he is getting a little “over-Godzillated”. A few weeks ago, Godzilla invaded Apple in a serial attempt Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and already in April we will have the second round of her battle with King Kong in the sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. And they returned to their famous export item in Japan as well. The well-known Japanese studio Toho, which is immortally associated with the creation of the legendary monster and its images, is coming up with its own ambitious attempt Godzilla -1.0, which basically takes the franchise back to the beginning with its story and motifs. We will look at Japan after the Second World War, when the whole nation is dealing with a huge post-war trauma and the fear of atomic weapons. And thanks to the atomic tests, the dangerous Godzilla appears on the coast.
That it is already a dusty subject, that has nothing new to offer? Error! According to overseas reviews, Godzilla -1.0 is not only among the best blockbusters of the year, but also among the strongest films with the title monster ever. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has 100% positive reviews with a very strong 8.1 rating. Critics praise the film precisely because it does not rely only on top-notch tricks and destructive destruction, but bets on the strong motif of war trauma and the anxiety of the population, which is reflected in every character, and director Takashi Yamazaki is able to sell it in an emotional and engaging spectacle.
In many moments, the film is therefore more of an intense personal drama than a disaster film, but the creators manage to bring these two levels together perfectly. Among other things, he is also able to sell the fear, tension and enormous power of the titular monster very well. The action scenes are top-notch in terms of tricks and craftsmanship, and even if it is said that sometimes the melodrama may push the saw a little too much, the authors are still aware of their B-movie roots and simply serve up an exciting popcorn movie that is not afraid of humorous passages either. According to a number of critics, the film shoves all Hollywood attempts with the monstrous legend in the pocket, and since 1954 there have not been many better efforts with Godzilla. And those are already very strong words. After all, we will find out whether the enthusiastic reviews are on point in Czech cinemas already on December 1.
