Godoy Cruz revalidated their morale and beat Deportivo Riestra 4-1 on matchday 11 of the 2024 Professional League at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium in Mendoza to claim their third consecutive win, with goals from Salomón Rodríguez, Daniel Barrea on two occasions and Facundo Altamira, while Braian Sánchez scored for Malevo.
Daniel Oldrá’s team left behind their poor start to the second tournament of the year and not only left the bottom of the table but was again within reach of the lead in the annual table, after signing their third victory in a row and being one of those that added the most points since the restart of activities after the Copa América. Almost from the beginning of the match, Tomba managed to get ahead of their rival on duty, by getting two goals in less than ten minutes after two plays on the right wing that Rodríguez and Barrea managed to transform into goals. On the other side of the coin, injuries affected Malevo who before the end of the first half made three changes – divided between two windows – due to the physical problems of Goya and Alonso. Not before the end of that fateful first half for Fabbiani’s team did Barrea appear again to turn the victory into a rout, an ideal situation for the Expreso back in their locker room.
The second half brought even more dominance for the home team, to the point that Altamira managed to get into the scoring column, stretching the gap even further. That fourth and final goal marked the end of Godoy Cruz’s tie, which only then gave the ball to its opponent, who managed to end the match with his goal of honour thanks to Sánchez. The night was a perfect one for Mendoza’s team, which was tainted at the end by the expulsion, at the request of the VAR, of its captain Pier Barrios, with the match already at 4-1 and eventually decisive.
With this result, Tomba climbs to fourteenth place with 15 points, while in the Annual Table it rises to fourth place with 44 points, with one game less due to the incidents against San Lorenzo, so if it wins it would be the leader. As for Malevo, the defeat keeps it in sixteenth place with 15 points, while in the cumulative of the two tournaments it only appears in twenty-second place with 28 points, in the third to last place with regard to the averages. In the next date, Godoy Cruz will visit Lanús in La Fortaleza while Riestra will receive Sarmiento, in a key clash in the lower part of the accumulated tables and for permanence in the top category.
