Spectacular deployment of the New York police: On this day, the alleged boss of one of the oldest Italian Mafia families was arrested.
According to the indictment, he and several members of the family, who were also arrested, are charged with extortion and money laundering. A total of ten members of the Colombo family were accused.
Wanted to infiltrate the union
The Mafia boss in question is presumably 87-year-old Andrew “Mush” Russo. His number two, 83-year-old Benjamin Castellazzo and his advisor Ralph DiMatteo are also among the defendants. They allegedly tried to infiltrate a union and take control of it.
One of the five largest Mafia families in the northeastern United States
The Colombo family is particularly well known in the northeastern United States. It is one of five large Italian-American mafia organizations there. The rest are the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese and Bonanno families. The boss of the Colombo family, Andrew Russo, has already been convicted of seven crimes and was last released from prison eight years ago.
