Goat Simulator Remastered Review: Is it Worth the Buy or a Bland Copy?

I recently picked up the original Goat Simulator that was on sale for the first time. I had heard of its origins as a prototype game, and was surprised by how much fun the game turned out to be. I remember being quickly drawn to the co-op opportunity, as well as the humor and absurdity, and after enjoying both the original and Goat Simulator 3, I was excited to try Goat Simulator Remastered . On the other hand, I immediately thought how interesting a remake of this game would be, considering the lack of story and structure that characterizes the series. And also, is this remaster even necessary, if there is also Goat Simulator 3?

Regarding my first question: Goat Simulator Remastered seems to be a copy of Goat Simulator, but redone in the Goat Simulator 3 engine. You play as a goat in a boxed environment sand, free to roam and cause as much chaos as possible. Whether you’re hitting pedestrians, kicking random objects, or licking things to see what happens, the gameplay is intentionally random and open-ended. There are no real goals other than creating chaos, which can be attractive if you’re in the right frame of mind. Visually, the game has been updated to meet Goat Simulator 3 standards, and while the improved graphics are nice, I don’t think they do much to change the experience.

The remaster features several worlds and I was curious to explore them, especially the expansions I missed in the original game. For example, there is an RPG-like area with a medieval theme, a space station with spaceships, and a zombie survival area with a very large city to explore. The humor and absurdity are still there, and I enjoyed finding new jokes and quirks within the DLC areas. However, when I revisited the original two maps, I quickly lost interest as I had experienced most of what they had to offer, where they didn’t hold my attention for long. without new content or updates.

Like the other Goat Simulator games, one of the highlights of Goat Simulator Remastered for me is the couch co-op mode. The ability to play with up to four people makes the game much more fun, as the chaotic gameplay becomes funnier when you share it with friends. We had a lot of laughs at the references to other games and silly situations in general, and this multiplayer aspect really brings out the best in the game. I also find the game attractive if you want to play with children. The simple mechanics and lack of over the top gameplay make it accessible and easy for younger players to enjoy. The game just shines in a group setting in my opinion and the random fun feels fresh longer.

Unfortunately, the many bugs that were part of the original Goat Simulator are still there in the remaster. I was looking forward to a smoother experience than the original, but the more I played, the harder it got. My goat often got stuck in random places and especially in debris. Once my friend and I got stuck in a wooden pallet floating in space, which is difficult, even if there is always an option to just re-spawn. I also noticed that objects in the game, such as food stalls or fences in zombie mode, often fall erratically, leaving you stranded. I feel that if you do a remaster you should at least try to fix these bugs as they interfere with the main game.

When I played the original Goat Simulator, its rough edges were forgotten. Knowing that it had started as a small project for a developer competition, the quirks felt charming rather than frustrating. But now, with Goat Simulator Remastered, I feel that charm doesn’t hold up very well. Without a story or major update, the randomness feels more repetitive and I found myself getting bored faster than I expected. The more I played, the more I felt like playing Goat Simulator 3 again. In that game, the fun and mayhem have some kind of structure, and the jokes feel like they have more depth.

In conclusion, I think Goat Simulator Remastered can still be a fun introduction to the series for newcomers. It’s a great choice for couch co-op, where the silly gameplay and chaos promise plenty of laughs. If you are looking for an unusual board game to enjoy with friends or children, it is easy to recommend in these situations. However, for returning players or if you’re looking for something to play on your own, I don’t think there’s enough here to make the remaster worth buying. The lack of story and buggy gameplay means you’re better off spending your money elsewhere, even Goat Simulator 3, which seems like a smarter buy because it offers the same fun but in the much more complete package.
