Springfield Thunderbirds goaltender Joel Hofer scored an empty net goal Thursday in his team’s 6-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the score was 4-2 Springfield, Hofer clawed back a clearance behind his net and took off as the cage was empty on the other side of the rink. His shot was perfectly placed to fly over Penguins defenders and end his run into the back of the net to kickstart the celebrations in the Thunderbirds’ camp.
The goaltender also stood out defending his own net with 34 saves on 36 shots to help his team take a 2-0 series lead.
Matthew Peca was one of the other scorers in the victory for the Thunderbirds. In the defeat, Pierre-Olivier Joseph found the back of the net.
