Goalkeeper Tony Esposito, a Chicago hockey legend, has died

The Canadian native Esposito played his debut season 1968/69 in Montreal, but then defended the colors of Chicago until 1984. For his performances, the younger brother of forward Phil Esposito won the Calder Trophy for the best rookie of the competition and three times the Vezina Trophy for the best goalkeeper.

“It’s a sad day for the Blackhawks and hockey. But let’s celebrate his well-lived life. His jersey will forever remain part of the (hall) United Center, as well as his legacy of a superstar on and off the ice, “said Chicago President Rocky Wirtz. After the end of his career, the famous goalkeeper worked for a quarter of a century until 2008 as a club ambassador.

Esposito was selected for the Star Game six times and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988. He played 886 games in the NHL and scored 423 wins, with 76 net accounts in tenth place in the history table of the competition.

For his native Canada, Esposito captured four matches in the famous Series of the Century in 1972 against the Soviet Union and also represented at the World Championships in Vienna in 1977. Four years later, he defended the United States goal in the Canadian Cup.
