The Selber Wolves have signed goalkeeper Michel Weidekamp, who last played for the Saale Bulls Halle. He is scheduled as the new number one. The 22-year-old left-wing catcher signed a one-year contract with the wolves and will replace Niklas Deske, who did not receive a new contract offer and was hired by Deggendorfer SC.
“Six years in the north are enough – I’m ready for something new,” said Michel Weidekamp when asked why he decided to move to the south. Before joining Saale Bulls Halle, for which he played 22 competitive games between the posts, Weidekamp slipped on the Herner EV jersey for four seasons, for which he had a total of 83 appearances. Both in Herne and later in Halle, his local trainer was called Herbert Hohenberger. “Herbie was the decisive reason for my move to Selb, under him I played my best hockey so far and I want to continue that with the wolves,” said Weidekamp.
The 1.77 meter tall and 72 kilogram goalie himself came to ice hockey relatively late. “I started inline hockey when I was about six years old, before I came to ice hockey with a good friend when I was ten,” said Weidekamp, who started his professional career in Herne at the age of 16.
The fact that he held a grants for the DEL last winter after the Iserlohn grizzly at Wolfsburg does not give the Iserlohn much importance. “I was the third goalkeeper in Wolfsburg, committed as a mere security for the two regular goalies. But of course the summer training and the normal training, when I was on site, was great for me, helped me a lot in my personal development, ”said the new self.
What the latter was denied in Wolfsburg, he succeeded in the 2017/18 season with the Krefeld penguins: his first and so far only DEL assignment. Weidekamp remembers exactly the 8th of September 2017. “It was against Munich, I came in in the last section, we led just under 2-1 before Munich equalized. In overtime, Michi Wolf then single-handedly beat me to 2: 3 – despite defeat a sensational feeling of having played a DEL game. ”
Wölfe coach Herbert Hohenberger is looking forward to his goalie, who has plenty of experience despite only 22 years of experience. “I have known Weide since I was in Herne, and he played under me last year in Halle. I was always satisfied with his performance and I know what we get with him, ”said Hohenberger. The 51-year-old Wölfe coach rated his new number 1 as follows: “He always bribed with his excellent physical fitness, with his good positional game and because of his person is extremely important for the cabin – the overall package is right.”
