It is possible to save big on dentistry costs if you attend schools where dentists and hygienists study.
In fact, nine CEGEPs across Quebec offer training in dental techniques (see table) and three universities offer dental programs: McGill, Montreal and Laval. The prices are really advantageous, the care is of the best quality (the students are obviously supervised by their teachers) and, often, it is free for very young children.
For example, in dental hygiene (cleaning, scaling, polishing, whitening, x-rays), it is often free for children aged 4 and 5. In some places, free admission extends to ages 11 and up. I noticed that a visit costs $25 for children aged 6 to 13 depending on the clinic.
For adults, we are talking about prices varying between $40 and $65. However, in private clinics, we often pay $250 and much more. In addition, most student clinics offer filling services: a dentist provides anesthesia, removes the decayed part and a student takes care of filling the cavity. The price is around $25 per surface.
Almost all student clinics also offer teeth whitening (around $150) and mouth guards (from $35 to $50). Some charge $60 for three cleaning-descaling appointments.
Assessment session
In dentistry, it is normally necessary to have an evaluation session before obtaining treatments. This exam costs between $25 and $160 depending on the type of intervention and the emergency. The list of treatments is too long to list their costs here, but we are talking about rates that would be 20% to 40% (50% at McGill) cheaper than in a private practice. For x-rays, it is even more advantageous (around $50).
To these costs are added those for parking (between $4.50 and $20 per hour). Normally, all treatments are covered by insurance. However, certain diagnostic appointments or parking are not refundable. Without insurance, it is possible to include treatments in your tax return.
You must always pay the same day. Find out in advance about payment terms.
Be patient
Obviously, clinics are not open outside of the school calendar (in summer and during the holidays). You will also sometimes have to wait longer than in private practice. In dentistry, your case will be evaluated according to its complexity and whether it is urgent or not. So you can wait a few days or… several months, or even up to a year.
For example, simple fillings are of less interest to future dentists than complicated cases such as gum grafts, multiple procedures, implants or complex prostheses.
You must also be available for a minimum of three hours when choosing student clinics. And if they do not refuse anyone, each has its operating criteria (for example, some only offer one annual cleaning or descaling; others, three).
It is best to make an appointment well in advance, especially in September and January. Please note: clinics do not provide cleaning appointment reminders.
