GNR arrests forest fire suspect in Alijó – Portugal

A 68-year-old man was arrested in the act, in Alijó, for the crime of forest fire, after an authorized burning that went out of control, announced this Tuesday the Territorial Command of Vila Real of the GNR.

After a forest fire alert, the military from the Territorial Post of Alijó went to the place and found that, at its origin there must have been “an authorized burning of leftovers, which went out of control due to the non-adoption of the necessary security measures”.

This fire, according to the GNR of Vila Real, in a statement, “consumed an area of ​​undergrowth and pine forest of approximately 0.2 hectares”.

During the proceedings, the alleged author of the burning was arrested and the facts referred to the Judicial Court of Alijó.

On February 25, the GNR arrested another 66-year-old man, also in flagrante delicto and in Alijó, for a fire that allegedly originated in an unauthorized burning that got out of control.

On March 2, according to the Guard, a 71-year-old man was accused of forest fire, in the municipality of Vila Real, due to an authorized burning of remnants that went out of control.

During the year 2022, the Territorial Command of Vila Real identified 46 suspects of forest fires, ten of which were detained in the act.

The GNR reinforced that burnings are one of the main causes of fires in Portugal, that burning, burning heaps and bonfires is prohibited whenever there is a ‘very high’ or ‘maximum’ level of rural fire danger. ‘, depending on authorization or prior communication in other periods.

To avoid accidents, the Guard asks that safety rules be followed, that people are always accompanied and bring their mobile phone.
