GM plans to build a second battery plant in the United States

Washington, Mar 4 (EFE) .- General Motors (GM) is considering the construction of a second battery production plant in the United States together with the South Korean company LG for its electric vehicles, local media said on Thursday.

GM and LG Chem, a subsidiary of the LG company, have created the Ultium Cells joint venture and invested $ 2.3 billion to build a battery production plant in Ohio.

The plant, which will be completed in 2022, will produce the batteries necessary to equip the company’s next generation of electric vehicles.

GM said in a statement that it is exploring the feasibility of building a second battery production plant in the United States, together with LG Energy Solutions, through the joint venture Ultium Cells: ‘We look forward to making the decision on the possible project in the first mid-2021 ‘.

GM has announced that by 2025 it will launch 20 models of electric vehicles, for which it will invest 27,000 million dollars, using a new EV platform called Ultium that incorporates batteries in its design.

On January 28, GM pledged that by 2035 all its new light vehicles will be electric.

The first commercially produced vehicle with the Ultium platform is the GMC Hummer pickup truck, which will hit dealerships later this year.

The Detroit Free Press newspaper indicated that GM’s second battery plant could be located in the state of Tennessee, where the automaker has the Spring Hill assembly terminal, which produces the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 models as well as the GMC Acadia.

GM plans to produce the Cadillac Lyriq, the group’s first electric from the luxury brand, in Spring Hill. EFE
