Glynis Johns, Tony Award-winning stage and film star, known for playing the role of Winifred Banks — the mother of little Jane and Michael, an airhead suffragette — has died at the age of 100 alongside Julie Andrews in 1964 film «Mary Poppins». Mitch Clem, her manager, made the announcement, explaining that the woman died in a retirement home in Los Angeles of natural causes. “Glynis made her way through life with intelligence, wit and a love of performance, impacting millions of lives,” Clem said. «Today is a sad day for Hollywood. Not only do we mourn the passing of our dear Glynis, but also the end of the golden age of Hollywood”, remembering the actress, daughter of art, born on 5 October 1923 in Pretoria, South Africa, during a tour of her Welsh parents.
In addition to her role in «Mary Poppins», Johns is famous for playing Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s «A Little Night Music», for which she won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical. She was also the first person to interpret the famous song Send in the Clowns, later performed by personalities of the caliber of Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Sarah Vaughan and Olivia Newton-John. “I’ve always said Send In The Clowns was the best gift I’ve ever been given,” Johns said.
Her last acting roles were in the 1995 film While You Were Sleeping, with Sandra Bullock, and in the 1999 film Superstar with Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell.
