Technological developments make it easy for us to measure the health of the body. Recently, technology to measure sugar levels in the body has become a solution for health.

Glucose sensors are expected to be a replacement for measuring blood sugar. The device, called Lingo, has been introduced to people who do not suffer from diabetes, but who want to see how food and other activities affect their sugar levels. aca, as announced by SCMP, Saturday (2/11/2024).

How to use

Abbott’s Lingo biosensor is usually worn on the back of the upper arm to monitor glucose in the body’s interstitial fluid, which is the fluid between cells, under the skin. Interstitial fluid absorbs glucose after it enters a person’s bloodstream.

Lingo has a filament placed just under the skin to measure glucose. Users can view their glucose levels in a phone app, and use it to record food and exercise, as well as receive personalized recommendations.

Lingo can be worn on the arm for 14 days before it needs to be replaced. The price of one Lingo sensor that lasts two weeks is USD 49 (about Rp. 776 thousand at the exchange rate of Rp. 15,849), with two sensors costing USD 89 (about Rp. 1.4 million), and six sensors costing USD 249 (Rp. 3.9 million).

Even though it is sophisticated, this device is still a topic of debate among medical professionals. Dr. Falguni Vasa, head of endocrinology at Duly Health and Care in Illinois, believes that this tool will help people take better care of their body’s health.

“By identifying spikes, it allows them to be more proactive with other food and lifestyle choices,” says Dr. Falguni.

On the other hand, Dr. Natalie Cameron of Northwestern Medicine expressed concern that the device could cause some users to worry too much about their health. “For a limited time, this may help increase awareness, but too many measurements can make people who are already healthy nervous,” says Dr. Natalie.

A user named Larry Colen, a 64-year-old man from Riverside, California, found this tool very helpful. After being diagnosed with prediabetes, he used a glucose sensor to monitor blood sugar levels directly, which helped him maintain a healthy diet.

“I really feel that if everyone, at risk of diabetes or not, took it for a few weeks a year starting at age 40, and took it earlier for those at risk of diabetes, thousands or millions of people would have access. to make lifestyle changes and it would be better to prevent diabetes, rather than treat it after it happens,” said Larry.
