After two relatively quiet New Year’s nights, hospitals, police and firefighters in Germany assume they will have significantly more work and operations than in 2021/22 and 2020/21. The sale of fireworks on New Year’s Eve has also been banned in the past two years to relieve hospitals of additional patients during the pandemic period.
The medical organization Marburger Bund has asked Böller for caution. Many aid stations are already overstretched and, of course, New Year’s fireworks always carry an additional risk of accidents, said Marburger Bund president Susanne Johna of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ). This applies not only to active fireworks, but also to spectators
In Berlin, an accident hospital spokesman said further injuries such as torn fingers after botched fireworks were expected. We assume operations will continue from around 3am until late on New Year’s Eve. Two groups are particularly at risk: drunks who handle fireworks improperly. And children on New Year’s Eve who want to collect and light fireworks or extinguished fireworks.
