GlobalFoundries and Lockheed Martin Partner to Secure Domestic Semiconductor Supply for Defense Systems

Chipmaker GlobalFoundries and defense giant Lockheed Martin announced a partnership this week. It is aimed at securing domestic supplies of semiconductors for defense systems.

What is known

Strategic cooperation will provide a range of advanced semiconductors and next-generation microchips. In addition, the partnership involves the use of GlobalFoundries technologies to increase the resilience of microelectronics systems and supply chains.

Now all defense contractors are suffering from disruptions in supply chains, which are caused primarily by the shortage of semiconductor products. The shortage of chips was triggered in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Three years later, the problem is still present.

The Lockheed Martin and GlobalFoundries partnership directly supports the US government’s chip law. It aims to encourage leading players in the semiconductor market to relocate their manufacturing facilities to the US. The law provides for the allocation of approximately $52 billion in government subsidies.

GlobalFoundries has US Government accredited manufacturing facilities. The factories are located in Vermont and New York and allow the production of secure microcircuits for sensitive systems.
