Amsterdam has always been below sea level, but its effective system of dams and levees has successfully prevented the sea from taking over the entire city. However, as sea levels rise, the question of the sustainability of this approach becomes more pressing. If the negative effects of global warming are not curbed, Amsterdammers will either have to find a revolutionary solution that has never been seen before, or abandon practically all the districts that surround its historic center.
