The United States handed Bob Hartley’s Latvia a first regulation loss on Thursday at the World Hockey Championship with a 4-2 victory.
With this victory, the United States is approaching a point from the top of Group B, held by Finland.
Matt Tennyson quickly opened the scoring in the opening two minutes of the game, before seeing Miks Indrasis tie the game moments later.
Brian Boyle put the Americans back on track with just over five minutes left in the 1re period, but as had been the case earlier, Latvia quickly tied the game with a goal from Renars Krastenbergs.
Midway through the second period, Trevor Moore and 2021 draft prospect Matthew Beniers netted two quick goals.
The United States managed to maintain the lead to victory.
Also on Thursday, Finland beat Italy 3-0, the Czech Republic beat Sweden 4-2 and Switzerland beat Slovakia 8-1.
