Global Smartphone Market Report: Q2 2023 – Decline Eases, Samsung Leads, Apple Follows

KOMPAS.com – Market research firm Canalys released a global smartphone market report for the second quarter of 2023 (April-June).

In that period, the world smartphone market fell 11 percent on an annual basis (year-on-year/YoY).

Even though it fell YoY, this figure is slightly better than the 12 percent decline in the first quarter of 2023 (QoQ).

For six consecutive quarters, world smartphone shipments have indeed declined. Analysts see signs of early recovery in the second quarter of 2023 with an 11 percent decline.

Analysts see that the world’s smartphone vendors are stimulating an increase in demand for these phones, by carrying out marketing campaigns and providing intensive incentives in various purchase channels.

Smartphone vendors are also reportedly investing in manufacturing and have a direct presence in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and India. These are a number of factors that are driving forces for sustainable growth.

In the end, it helped suppress the decline in the smartphone market in the second quarter of 2023.

South Korean mobile phone vendor, Samsung became the smartphone market leader in this period, followed by Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.

Top 5 smartphone vendors in the world

In the second quarter of 2023, Samsung is still the leader in the world mobile phone market. Canalys noted that Samsung managed to gain 21 percent market share in this period. This figure is exactly the same as Samsung’s market share in the second quarter of 2022.

Apple follows Samsung in second place with a market share of 17 percent.

The three vendors that are in the top five in a row include Xiaomi (13 percent), Oppo (10 percent), and Vivo (8 percent), as compiled by KompasTekno from site Canalys Newsroom, Kamis (20/7/2023).
