Huawei said on Monday that US sanctions against it are, in part, the reason for the global chip deficit, a deficit that was also the topic of a White House conference, CNBC reports according to news.ro.
Eric Xu, Huawei’s rotating president, said the sanctions imposed by the US over the past two years “affect the global semiconductor industry” because they have “disrupted the industry’s relationship of trust”.
“US sanctions are the main reason for the accumulation of sleeve stocks by major companies around the world,” Xu told Huawei’s analyst summit.
He added: “Some of them have never made stocks of any kind, but because of the sanctions they now hold stocks for three or six months.”
Huawei has also stockpiled chips in a bid to ensure its telecommunications and consumer electronics business can continue as normal.
Some companies in other industries, such as the automotive sector, have been forced to temporarily cease operations due to a chip shortage.
Automotive executives and technology leaders attended an online meeting with US President Joe Biden on Monday.
The United States has sanctioned Huawei for creating access gates to its pro-Beijing espionage equipment.
In 2019, Huawei was included on a blacklist of companies, called the List of Entities, which prohibits US companies from exporting certain technologies to the Chinese group.
Huawei denies US allegations.
Xu said the Biden administration does not expect the rules to change too soon, and the company is investing in new areas such as health care, agriculture and electric cars to mitigate the impact of US sanctions.
Huawei announced on Monday that it intends to invest $ 1 billion in autonomous driving and electric vehicle research and development, wanting to compete with Tesla, Apple, Nio and Xiaomi.
Xu said that his autonomous driving technology already surpasses that of Tesla, allowing driving without the intervention of the driver over a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers. Tesla vehicles can do this over a distance of over 800 kilometers, and drivers must keep their hands behind the wheel.
Huawei will initially partner with three autonomous automobile manufacturers, BAIC Group, Chongqing Changan Automobile and Guangzhou Automobile Group.
The Huawei logo will probably be placed on cars, just like the Intel logo on some computers.
