For the first time, global sales of mobile phones with 5G technology surpassed those of 4G handsets in January, driven by the Chinese market, the expansion of state-of-the-art networks and competitive prices.
5G devices reached a market penetration of 51% in January 2022, surpassing that of 4G mobile phones for the first time, according to data published by the consultancy Counterpoint Research, cited by the EFE agency.
By geographic area, the main growth drivers were China, Western Europe and North America.
In the case of China, the country led sales in January 2022, with a percentage of 5G mobile phone sales of 84%, while in Western Europe and North America it stood at 76% and 73%, respectively.
Counterpoint concludes that 5G device sales in North America and Western Europe were boosted by the October 2020 launch of Apple’s first 5G device, the iPhone 12 series, causing sales to gradually increase.
On the other hand, the consultancy points out that the next areas of expansion of this technology will be Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Latin America, where 4G continues to predominate, but 5G penetration is expected to increase thanks to the introduction of new models with a lower price. less than 140 euros.
The consultant’s data also indicates that the rise of 5G mobile phones in the market was also driven by the proliferation of devices at competitive prices, since the introduction of ‘chips’ from MediaTek and Qualcomm allowed the cost to fall to a range between 140 and 230 euros.
5G mobile phones with prices between 140 and 230 euros represented 25% of total mobile sales with this feature in January 2022.
Counterpoint further details that global mobile phone sales increased by 4% in 2021, surpassing 1,390 million units.
