Global New Year’s Eve Celebrations: Fireworks and Festivities Around the World

Fireworks have been ringing out across the globe over the past 24 hours for New Year’s Eve.

The planet celebrating. If countries celebrated the New Year at different intervals depending on time zones, the festive cocktail was the same: pyrotechnics show, traditional countdown and cry of joy.

The people of the Pacific celebrated New Year’s Eve first. The Kiribati Islands and New Zealand got the ball rolling 13 hours ahead of France. Then Australia followed.

More than a million revelers gathered on the foreshore of Sydney, the self-proclaimed “New Year’s Capital of the World”, to admire the grandiose fireworks display above the Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

In Paris, the traditional show on the Champs-Élysées attracted nearly 800,000 people. For the occasion, 6,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed in the streets of Paris.

Before the fireworks, a “video mapping” was projected on the Arc de Triomphe, with the main theme being the 2024 Olympic Games planned for Paris.

Then head to the American continent. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, thousands of people gathered on Copacabana beach to the rhythm of Samba steps. Dressed in white, Brazilians bathe in the ocean, throwing rose petals and even jewelry.

In New York in the United States, thousands of onlookers awaited the traditional descent of the crystal ball in Times Square, all lit up, and merchants sold vuvuzelas and hats stamped 2024.

The last to burst the champagne were the Tahitians and the Hawaiians when it was already 11 a.m. in mainland France.
