Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said that the organization is concerned about new mutations of the emerging corona virus.
Al-Manzari added in a press conference held by the organization today, Monday, that 13 countries have reported cases of infection with at least one of the three new mutations that have been reported globally, including mutations that may have higher transmission rates.
He explained that some new changes are linked to an increase in infection, and it could lead to an increase in cases and a rise in hospital admission rates, and given the number of hospitals that have already mobilized all their capacity, this may have a negative impact on other basic health services.
Al-Mandhari stressed that it is important for countries in our region to continue investigating these mutations and inform the organization about them, so that we can coordinate efforts to monitor their effects and provide advice to countries on them accordingly, pointing out that 14 countries in the region have genome sequencing capabilities, but some countries conduct operations. Most of the virus sequences at the moment.
