urged the general manager toGlobal Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged the member states Monday to make the necessary reforms to prepare for any future epidemic and to fulfill their previous pledges to increase funding for the United Nations organization.
This came as he was speaking during the organization’s general assembly, weeks after the end of the global emergency related to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Reuters.
Addressing member states, Ghebreyesus said it was time to advance negotiations on preventing the next pandemic.
He also added that “we can’t put this off,” warning that the next pandemic is likely to “happen soon.” And he added, “If we don’t implement the necessary changes, who will? And if we don’t implement them now, when?”
He also stressed that “this generation’s commitment (to an epidemic-related agreement) is important, because it is this generation that has experienced how terrible a small virus can be.”
It is noteworthy that the annual meetings of the General Assembly, which will last 10 days in Geneva and coincide with the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the organization, are scheduled to address many global health challenges, including future epidemics.
