Dalia Samhouri, director of the WHO’s preparedness and international health regulations program, commented on the direction of some countries, including Egypt, to reduce precautionary measures to counter the emerging corona virus (Covid-19).
Samhouri said in a video conference organized by the Regional Office of the World Health Organization on Tuesday: “Any country that thinks about reducing the precautionary measures, there are several factors that must be taken into account, including reviewing all available data on the epidemiological situation, and the ability of the health system to deal with cases. What is different if there is an increase in the number of new positive cases, and can the state deal with them? “
She pointed to the need to “define the risk, including groups most at risk, both the elderly and those with immune diseases.”
She explained that consideration should be given to the negative impact on the country’s economy with regard to the application of precautionary measures, and to what extent the state bears economic pressure.
She said, “There must be a system of procedures and a risk assessment, and we communicate with the communities. If there is a relaxation of the procedures, the spacing between the people should continue.”
Samhouri drew attention to the necessity to follow the epidemiological curve in every country, and actively search for cases of rapid control.
Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers, said that recent decisions taken by the government with the start of the month of Ramadan are aimed at providing citizens with a space to move before breakfast time and buying their needs, as a prelude to moving after the holiday in the direction of gradually returning life, and qualifying the citizen to the importance of following preventive measures, so that Conscious that there are situations he must live with.
On the studies issued regarding determining the urgency and end of the epidemic in several countries, Samhouri said: “We cannot say that there is a confirmed study, but there must be follow-up to each country and its procedures.”
