The foreign offices of the Council of Muslim Elders have formed beacons of hope and bridges of communication and coexistence in light of the various challenges the world is witnessing, and are one of the most important main means upon which it relies in spreading the values of dialogue and human brotherhood, and expanding the geography of its interaction with Muslims around the world, in order to achieve a better understanding of their issues. The most urgent, and drawing inspiration from their experiences in building civil peace and coexistence in their societies with components that differ from them religiously, linguistically, intellectually, culturally, and socially.
The first country in which the Council of Muslim Elders opened a branch was Malaysia, which is considered one of the most prominent countries characterized by its cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, which reflects a rich history of cultural exchange and mutual influences among its people.
Among the most prominent initiatives of the office in Malaysia in 2022 is the establishment of a library containing 4,000 titles in the fields of moderate thought, Islamic culture, combating extremism, and the humanities, which is visited by dozens of students and researchers, in addition to translating some of the Council’s publications from Arabic to Malay, and organizing many radio programs, events, and cultural activities with purpose. To spread the values of dialogue, tolerance and peace.
Last October, the Muslim Council of Elders officially opened its regional branch in Southeast Asia in the Republic of Indonesia, which is the largest Islamic country in terms of population, and one of the leading countries in promoting diversity and coexistence between different religions and cultures.
The Council’s step to open a branch in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, was welcomed and greatly praised by the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, and the Muslim masses in the Southeast Asian region. The Council’s branch in Indonesia worked to organize the Religions and Climate Change Conference, which was attended by about 150 of the most prominent religious leaders and academics concerned with environmental issues. Climate, officials and ministers in Indonesia and Southeast Asian countries, in addition to a number of radio programmes, seminars and community and cultural activities, and the Muslim Council of Elders branch won the best pavilion at the Indonesia Islamic Book Fair.
In Pakistan, the branch made extensive efforts to spread and promote the values of tolerance, coexistence, human brotherhood, respect and acceptance of others, and carried out many field visits, seminars and cultural activities, and introduced the main role played by tolerant religious teachings in promoting peace and hope, not only in the Pakistani context, but in the entire world.
In continuation of activating the role of the Council of Elders globally, and expanding the geography of its interaction with Muslims in their various societies around the world, a branch of the Council of Muslim Elders was opened in the Kazakh capital, Astana. It is the regional branch of the Council in the Central Asia and Caucasus region, and aims to achieve the Council’s objectives in spreading the values of coexistence and dialogue. And strengthening it, communicating with Muslim communities in the region, translating and publishing the Council’s publications into local languages, reviving the intellectual heritage of Muslim scholars and thinkers in the region and introducing them to the emerging generations.
During this year, the Council of Muslim Elders, headed by His Eminence the Grand Imam, Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, seeks to expand the scope of its efforts and open more offices and foreign branches affiliated with it in a number of countries in order to spread and enhance the values of dialogue, tolerance, and coexistence, and to redouble the efforts aimed at spreading centrism, moderation, and confronting… All forms of racism, intolerance, discrimination and Islamophobia
