Global Coral Bleaching Crisis: Reef Areas Suffering Record Levels of Bleaching

Increasing every week

In the past year, more than 54 percent of the world’s coral reef areas in 53 countries and territories have suffered bleaching, this includes large parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific and Indian Ocean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, and the International Coral Reef Initiative, ICRI, said in a joint statement.

“This event is likely to surpass the previous high of 56.1 percent soon,” he wrote Derek Manzellocoordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program, in an email to CNN.

He says the percentage of reef areas with heat and blowout stress has increased by about 1 percent per week.

Twelve warmest months

This is the fourth major bleeding in the world and the second in the last ten years. Major bleeding has previously occurred in 1998, 2010 and 2014–2017.

In the past year, large swells have been confirmed in Florida and the Caribbean, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, the South Pacific, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, Indonesia and the Indian Ocean, which ‘ including the east coast of Africa, as well as the Seychelles.

The Professor predicted the current mass bleeding several months ago Ove Hoegh-Guldbergclimate scientist specializing in coral reefs at the University of Queensland in Australia.

“We knew the ocean temperature was rising quickly, but not at this rate. The worrisome problem is that we don’t know how long this big temperature change will last,” he told CNN.

The past 12 months have been the warmest ever recorded on Earth, with global sea temperatures in February and March breaking heat records, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service at the European Commission.

Scary results: The ice can melt very quickly

Antarctic ice can melt very quickly and raise sea levels by five meters, which would be difficult for many coastal cities to handle.
