Status: 03/25/2022 5:08 p.m

“Fridays for Future” has called for demos for climate protection worldwide. In Germany alone there are around 300 rallies. Among other things, the movement calls for an end to the supply of oil, gas and coal from Russia.

The climate protection movement “Fridays for Future” once again demonstrated in numerous cities in Germany as part of its tenth global climate strike. One demand is a ban on the import of oil, natural gas and coal from Russia.

According to the movement, Moscow is waging “a fossil war” against Ukraine, which Germany supports with large sums of money every day by buying fossil fuels. At the same time, the strike should also point to the unabatedly escalating climate crisis.

More than 800 strikes planned worldwide

According to the climate protection movement, more than 800 climate strikes were planned worldwide, and there should be actions in around 300 places in Germany. In the capital, the activists counted 22,000 demonstrators, the Berlin police spoke of more than 10,000 participants at noon. They first gathered at Invalidenpark near the main train station in Berlin-Mitte and then walked to the Brandenburg Gate.

Environmentalist Luisa Neubauer had also announced herself on Instagram for the rally. Beforehand, she criticized the federal government: “If you – like Economics Minister Robert Habeck – want to get away from Putin’s gas and have to travel to Qatar, you are faced with a system issue,” Neubauer told the “tageszeitung”.

Climate researchers: “Energy like in the Stone Age”

According to “Fridays for Future”, around 12,000 people took to the streets in Hamburg. At a rally, “Fridays for Future” activist Annika Rittmann said in front of numerous demonstrators: “In a war that is largely financed by our imports,” one should not feel innocent in this country either. Around 20,000 demonstrators were expected.

The Kiel climate researcher Mojib Latif was also at the demo in Hamburg – and criticized German energy policy: “We generate energy like in the Stone Age by burning oil, coal and gas.”

“The only option left to us is action”

In Hanover and Oldenburg, the police counted 1,400 demonstrators each. There were also demos with thousands of participants in Cologne, Frankfurt, Mainz, Stuttgart, Münster and Freiburg.

In Bremen According to the police, around 3,200 people gathered. About 5,000 people are expected to attend a final rally. “The only option left to us is action,” a Fridays for Future spokeswoman called out to the demonstrators. The crowd had previously held a minute’s silence to commemorate the victims of the war in Ukraine. Many participants held up placards and banners, for example with the demands “End fossil fuels! Enter future” and “Don’t hesitate, get on with it”.

Representatives of trade unions, churches and non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International, Attac Germany, the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland and the Naturschutzbund took part in the protests.
