Glenn Solberg set a record with Sweden – won with 35 (!) goals

ALLOWED TO SMILE: The Norwegian handball coach Glenn Solberg could probably afford to smile. He has ensured a Swedish record after the match against Uruguay.

(Uruguay – Sweden 12–47) Uruguay became a throwaway ball when Glenn Solberg’s Sweden threw the ball into the hat with the opponent. Now the Norwegian has also ensured that Sweden broke its own record.

Never before had the Swedish men’s national handball team won by such a large margin. 35 goals separated Sweden and Uruguay on Monday evening in Gothenburg.

Aftonbladet writes that “sweet brother” won with 33 goals against Australia in 2005, but 18 years later, Norwegian Glenn Solberg has ensured that that record has been broken.

– It was a fantastic handball match. We stay focused for 60 minutes and that can be difficult in these types of games. It was a perfect evening for us, said the Norwegian coach to Swedish Viaplay after the match.

– It’s cool, it’s fun that we set a record, he said, smiling from ear to ear.

– Today we get to see a lot of players who come in and do very well. It will be difficult to take out a team going forward, but that is only good.

The team’s 22-year-old comet, Eric Johansson, became a particularly hot topic in the Swedish studio afterwards.

– He is going to be one of the very best in the world. There is no doubt about that. 19 goals is fantastic. But we will give him some time, the boy was born in 2000, said Solberg.

It was all joy and fun for Sweden’s supporters in their own grand hall on the west coast, where close to 12,000 witnessed handball history. Nevertheless, the Swedish star Jim Gottfridsson believes that there is too great a difference in level between the teams in the World Cup:

– There will be too many “blåbär matches”, he says to Aftonbladet when asked if 32 nations are too many in a World Cup.

A lead of 25-8 at the break was the happy reality for the home crowd in Scandinavium, Gothenburg. And then the match was effectively punctuated.

In one half, Sweden’s Hampus Wanne had scored ten goals.

The Swedish newspaper The Express summed it up nicely:

– Yes, there is probably not much to say about it here. Uruguay are simply too bad. Cool if you like a lot of goals, this, but it’s not a big handball match, wrote the newspaper in its live coverage.

Here you can see the highlights and judge for yourself whether it was a “big handball match”:

In the second half, the Swedes continued their great play. In the previous game, they had let Cape Verde into the game again after the break. It was a clear goal that it should not happen this time.

For Glenn Solberg’s men, they were not far from doubling their lead from the first half. It finally ended with a 47–12 victory.

  • Norway plays its third game on Tuesday night against the Netherlands at 20:30 on TV 3. The men’s handball won 32-21 against Argentina on Sunday after beating North Macedonia 39-27 in the first game last Friday.
